Famed architect Stanford White, partner of McKim, Mead and White, the largest and at times the most famous architectural firm in America practicing at the cusp of post civil war prosperity, was a master of classical architecture.

Perhaps lesser known was his mastery of interior design and ornamental detail in both residential and institutional buildings he created in New York, Newport R.I. and the Eastern shore of Long Island including his own summer home Box Hill. Few if any architects before or since employed decorative motifs with such flair, drew on so great a range of ideas, or achieved a density bordering on saturation without losing control. Drawing on precedents from antiquity and the Renaissance, from Asia, the Middle East and Europe he created complex surfaces inside and out. In his new book Stanford White in Detail, architect and White’s great grandson Samuel G. White, examines the innovative and intricate decorative web of carved wood and marble, metalwork, mosaic and tile that was his ancestor’s signature. White’s mastery of ornament and texture including: The Library of the Veterans Rooms at the Park Avenue Armory, the Villard Houses, the Payne Whitney House on Fifth Avenue and Rosecliff in Newport. His summer house Box Hill, Stanford White’s summer house—a laboratory for his creative mind, are also included. Don’t miss this up close and personal look at an extraordinary talent.
