Visible Bodies and the Beauty of Aging: Artist Elinor Carucci and curator Tal Dekel in conversation, moderated by Maya Benton, independent curator and Artis Board Member.

Join us for a conversation between New York-based artist Elinor Carucci and Tel Aviv-based curator Tal Dekel about their recent work on gender, feminism, and the experience of women in the arts and aging. Maya Benton, New York-based independent curator and Artis Board Member, will moderate the discussion.

Elinor Carucci will introduce her extensive photography work from over the last 30 years that documents the artist and her family. In her photographs, Carucci captures relatable, and often intimate, moments that tell stories about love, relationships, parenting, motherhood, growing-up, middle-age, and domesticity. Carucci will focus on her most recent body of work, Midlife (Monacelli 2019), a book of photographs examining the experience of middle-age and the various roles that some women play in this phase of life as mothers, daughters, partners, friends, companions, and professionals.

Tal Dekel, who has written about Carucci’s photographs in her book, Women and Ageism: Gender and Art in Israel, will speak about the ways that age and gender are presented in the work of contemporary women artists from Israel—and in Carucci’s work, in particular. Expanding on notions of ageism from a feminist perspective, Dekel will present her recent scholarly writing and curatorial work that spans feminist theory, identity politics, multiculturalism, and transnationalism.
